13 Qualities of a Healthy Relationship

Every relationship is unique. How one couple expresses these qualities may be very different from how another couple does. However healthy relationships tend to be alike in many ways. Here are some of signs of a healthy relationship:

1. Appreciation

You respect and value your partner, and express gratitude often.

2. Commitment

You are invested in your partner and the relationship. You give the relationship adequate time and energy.

3. Conflict Resolution

You take responsibility for your actions, and work as a team to solve problems.

4. Empathy

You take your partner’s perspective and understand their feelings, even if you do not always agree.

5. Independence

You have your own interests and goals separate from those of your partner.

6. Safety

You respect your partner’s boundaries. You feel safe physically, intellectually, and emotionally.

7. Balance

You find happiness in time spent together and apart. Some needs are met outside the relationship, through friendships and hobbies, etc.

8. Commonality

You share important goals, beliefs, and values with your partner.

9. Effective Communication

You communicate your own needs and wishes, while respecting and hearing those of your partner.

10. Honesty

Your actions align with your words. The thoughts and feelings you express are genuine.

11. Trust

You believe what your partner tells you and know that you can rely on them.

12. Intimacy

You feel close and connected with your partner physically and emotionally.

13. Self-Confidence

You feel comfortable being yourself in the relationship.

It may be important to note here that these relationship qualities are meant to go both ways in a relationship. We should be able to give and receive these qualities. They are also aspirations that may need some work to bring about the healthy relationship you want.  No relationship is perfect. If you are having difficulties in any of these areas, you may need some help from a Halifax therapist who can help bring you closer to the healthy and joyful relationship you desire.
