What is a secondary practicum?

A secondary practicum is designed to supplement your primary practicum experience. While a primary placement typically guarantees a set number of client hours, a secondary placement offers additional opportunities to develop your therapeutic skills and gain exposure to different client populations or therapeutic modalities. It’s a great way to broaden your experience and enhance your learning.

What therapy modality will I be learning?

The modality that you will be learning is narrative therapy. Narrative therapy is a form of therapy that focuses on understanding and reshaping the relationship between individuals and their problems. It helps clients externalize issues, seeing them as separate from themselves, which can empower them to address challenges more effectively. This approach emphasizes personal strengths and values, fostering self-awareness and resilience.

Is this an online practicum?

Yes. However, Acadia University requires that you are at an in-person clinic with an onsite supervisor. This could include working virtually from the training centre, Red Spruce Mental Health Centre, or discussing other options with Acadia’s Clinical Coordinator for the program. It is your responsibility to secure an onsite location that meets this requirement.

How many days a week is the practicum?

Our practicum takes place on Mondays (with the option to include Tuesdays) and requires evening availability. A typical schedule may include sessions at the following times:

• 9:30–10:30 AM
• 11:00 AM–12:00 PM
• Break
• 5:00–6:00 PM
• 6:30–7:30 PM
• 8:00–9:00 PM

How long is the practicum?

The duration of practicum II depends on whether you choose a full-time (FT) or part-time (PT) schedule. Full-time placements run for 4 months, with cohorts available from September to December or January to April. Part-time placements last 6 to 8 months, with cohorts running from September to April or January to June.

Who will be supervising me?

Your supervision will be provided by Julia Smith, RCT, CCC, the owner of Insight Mental Health Counselling. Julia is an experienced therapist who will offer guidance and support throughout your practicum placement. 1 hour of individual supervision will be provided for every 8 direct client hours. Important Note: We cannot guarantee a minimum number of client hours.

Are there any prerequisites?

Applicants must have completed the Queer Affirming Counselling course at Acadia University.
