Queer Therapy in Halifax: Therapy Questions We Love (Part 4)
At Insight Mental Health Counselling, we believe therapy should be a place where every part of you is welcomed, especially your queer identity. As providers of queer therapy in Halifax, we create a space where LGBTQ+ clients can explore their stories without judgment, unpack harmful narratives, and build pride in who they are.
So this Pride Month, we’re spotlighting two of our favourite questions we ask in queer-affirming therapy in Halifax. Questions that help clients heal, grow, and reclaim their sense of agency.
🌈 What Story Do You Want to Tell
“I love asking: What story do you want to tell about yourself, what is your preferred story? It gives clients the opportunity to explore and share ideas about how they would prefer to be treated or seen..” – Jane Donovan, RCT, Halifax Therapist
This question invites clients to reclaim authorship over their experiences. Too often, queer individuals are handed a narrative sometimes painful and center on struggle. Instead, we ask: What would you prefer to have happen?
This approach doesn’t ignore past challenges and it also allows space for clients to explore identity on their own terms. It allows for the naming and challenging of dominant cultural narratives, for instance, the idea that heterosexuality is the “default”. It encourages clients to see that there’s nothing wrong with them, but perhaps something very wrong with the stories they’ve been told.
This opens up the possibility to talk about:
- Preferred identities and pronouns
- Hopes, dreams, and values
- Queer joy and self-expression
- Chosen family and community
In queer counselling in Halifax, this question helps clients move from being defined by trauma to becoming the author of their own lives.
💪 What Strengths Have You Built as a Queer Person?
At Insight, we value stories of resistance and resilience just as much as we recognize struggle. One of our favorite questions in queer therapy sessions in Halifax is:
“What strengths have you developed in response to the challenges you’ve faced as a queer person?” ” Jules Smith, RCT, Halifax Therapist
This invites clients to reflect on their own:
- Adaptability – Navigating unsafe spaces with care and wisdom
- Empathy – Understanding others through lived experience
- Courage – Coming out or letting others in, when it’s safe
- Creativity – Expressing identity through art, fashion, or voice
- Critical thinking – Questioning dominant, heteronormative narratives
Each of these is a skill, a strength, and a form of resistance and proof that queer people are not only surviving but thriving in ways that deserve recognition and celebration.
🧠 Narrative Therapy for Queer Clients in Halifax
At Insight Mental Health Counselling Halifax, we use narrative therapy to help queer clients reclaim their stories. Too often, dominant cultural narratives are shaming, silencing, or exclusionary. Especially for those in the LGBTQ+ community.
Through our queer-affirming therapy in Halifax, we work with clients to uncover what narrative therapists call unique outcomes: moments when a person’s actions, thoughts, or experiences contradict the dominant problem story, revealing alternative stories of strength, values, and possibility. These moments, no matter how small, are powerful. They build agency, confidence, and self-knowledge—all of which are important to healing and embracing queer identity with pride.
🏳️🌈 Why Queer Therapy Matters in Halifax
Halifax is home to a vibrant and diverse LGBTQ+ community. But many queer and trans people still face:
- Lack of family support
- Discrimination in schools or workplaces
- Medical trauma or misgendering
- Internalized shame or self-doubt
Our queer therapy in Halifax provides a space to unpack these experiences with affirming therapists who understand. Whether you’re exploring your gender identity, coming out, building queer relationships, or processing trauma, you deserve a space where your story is heard and honoured.
